My faith in the reality of spirit is empirical.

That is, it is founded on experience rather than, say, belief or theory.

Some of that experience is my own, but most is that of other people. as reported to me directly or indirectly via recorded interviews I hear and watch or via books and articles I read.

Except for zoo experiences, most people have faith in the reality of bears on the same basis.

Some people, because of their religious belief system, cannot agree with my understanding of spirit, and that is fine. But some religious belief systems do have a place for my sense of what spirit is.

And some people, because of their scientific belief system, cannot agree either. For them, science has demonstrated the nonexistence of spirit as I know it. But a rather large number of scientists of established position and impeccable credentials also have a place for my sense of spirit.

Because the claim that science has already disproved the possibility of life after death is so prominent in the belief systems of so many of us today, I want to list a few scientists who do not share that belief. Fellow to the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, Professor Emeritus William A. Tiller, of Stanford University’s Department of Materials Science, spent 34 years in academia after 9 years as an advisory physicist with the Westinghouse Research Laboratories.

He has published over 250 conventional scientific papers, 3 books and several patents. In parallel, for over 30 years, he has been avocationally pursuing serious experimental and theoretical study of the field of psychoenergetics which will very likely become an integral part of "tomorrow’s" physics. In this new area, he has published an additional 100 scientific papers and four seminal books.

The Dr. Edgar Mitchell Foundation for Research into Extraterrestrial Encounters (FREE) is a not-for-profit co-founded by the late Dr. Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14 Astronaut), Dr. Rudy Schild (Emeritus Professor of Astrophysics at Harvard University), Australian researcher Mary Rodwell and Rey Hernandez, a US federal tax attorney and Experiencer.
